Balkan Road Trip: Where to Go and What to Do
Slovenia: Spring Awakening
Slovenia bursts into life as spring arrives. The forests, mountains, rivers, and lakes explode into vibrant greens, making it a top destination for outdoor adventures. Slovenia is the third most forested country in the EU, with nearly 60% of the country covered by forests. Here’s a list of the top things to do during your spring road trip in Slovenia:
Slovenia is known for its stunning plateaus, perfect for hiking and soaking in fresh mountain air. One of the most amazing is Velika Planina, accessible by foot or a scenic ski lift. In early spring, the hills come alive with purple crocuses blooming across the landscape.
Camping under Velika Planina: Camping Alpe.
While most ski resorts in Slovenia lose their snow in spring, Kanin Ski Resort remains snow-covered due to its elevation of over 2000 meters. Spend the morning skiing and then head to the Adriatic coast to cool off in the sea—just a 2-hour drive away! You can also stay overnight in a campervan at a friend’s house in the valley.

Lake Bled is one of Slovenia’s most iconic destinations. Surrounded by mountains and with a picturesque island in the middle, it's a popular spot for tourists. However, in the spring, you can enjoy this stunning location without the usual crowds.
Spring is the perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities like biking and hiking. The temperatures in spring are ideal for exploring Slovenia’s diverse landscape without the heat of summer.

Piran, a romantic Adriatic coastal town, is full of narrow streets and old-world charm. In spring, the temperatures along the coast are mild, perfect for enjoying fresh seafood. Just outside Piran, you can visit the Sečovlje Salt Pans, where traditional salt production takes place.
Camping near Piran: Camping Fiesa
Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is a charming small city. In spring, people gather in parks, bars, and restaurants to soak up the good vibes. Don’t miss the Ljubljanica River, which divides the Old Town, with beautiful bridges connecting the two sides. The Ljubljana Castle overlooks the city from its hilltop perch.
Maribor, Slovenia’s second-largest city, is known for its old vine, the world’s oldest grapevine, which produces wine over 400 years old.
Road Trip Croatia: Coastal Beauty and Hidden Gems
As Slovenia’s neighbor, Croatia offers some of the most stunning coastlines in the world, along with beautiful national parks and historic cities. Here’s what to experience in Croatia during spring:
Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, has a great atmosphere with its vintage trams, green parks, and welcoming locals. You’ll also find a lively nightlife scene. If you have time, take a tour in a vintage Yugo car for a nostalgic experience. They offer special deals for our customers. Check out Yugo Car Adventure for more details.
Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the world. With waterfalls, crystal-clear rivers, and lush forests, spring is the best time to visit before the crowds arrive.
Camping near Plitvice Lakes: Camping Korana
Known for being the filming location of King’s Landing in Game of Thrones, Dubrovnik is an absolute must-see. In spring, the city is less crowded, allowing you to enjoy its narrow streets and romantic ambiance.
Wild asparagus is a seasonal treat in Croatia, typically available in April and May. It’s a fun and tasty activity to pick your own and learn some traditional recipes to cook it.
For foodies, the Oyster Festival in Ston (South Croatia) is a spring highlight. The festival, held on March 21-22, celebrates the local oysters with various preparation styles.
Ston is just 45 minutes from Dubrovnik and offers beautiful views of the coast.
Road Trip Bosnia & Herzegovina: Natural Beauty and Rich History
Bosnia & Herzegovina offers beautiful landscapes and fascinating historical sites. Here are some must-see spots:
The ancient town of Mostar is famous for its Old Bridge (Stari Most), a symbol of peace. In spring, you can enjoy the town without the summer crowds, and watch the brave locals jump from the bridge into the cold Neretva River.
Sarajevo is one of the most fascinating cities in the Balkans. Despite its turbulent past, the city has a vibrant spirit, especially with the return of young people. Be sure to try Turkish coffee, sample Bosnian burek, and visit the Tunnel of Hope and the Sarajevo Historical Museum.
Bosnia is home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Europe. Kravice and Pliva are two of the most stunning, and both are located near popular towns.
Buna Springs is a natural phenomenon where crystal-clear water emerges from a cave and forms the Buna River. The nearby Tekija (a traditional Balkan house) offers a breath-taking view of the river and gorge.
