Our story

The idea was born 

Hello there!

We’re Nejc and Sara from Slovenia, and this is the story of how Balkan Campers came to be.

Back in 2012, Nejc was on a round-the-world trip and landed in Australia, where he quickly realized that everything was a bit pricey for a backpacker’s budget. So, he rented an old-school camper van—and fell in love with the freedom it gave him. Waking up to kangaroos and dolphins, he felt a sense of freedom like never before.

After that, he couldn’t shake the idea: what if we brought that same van life experience to Slovenia and the Balkans?

First customers

Only a few days after we set up the website, a group of guys from Slovenia booked our first VW T3 camper van with the name Grga. We were jumping and screaming like small kids. Guys took Grga for an incredible 17 days Balkan road trip and we became very good friends. We still hang out on a daily basis.

Balkan Campers project brought us many amazing people and some very good friends. Perhaps this is the most beautiful thing about this project.

How we freed ourselves?

Once upon a time, I was working a regular 9-to-5, saving up every bit I could to invest in my dream: camper vans. For five years, I poured all my energy into that job and my savings into the vans. Finally, after all that hard work, I was able to leave the routine behind and dive fully into a life of travel, freedom, and sharing these adventures with others.

This would probably never happen if I wouldn't meet brothers Miha and Žiga. They were hard core camper van enthusiasts with more technical knowledge than me. We combined the forces and in a few years we were able to offer 15 camper vans.

Right around this time, I met Sara, who felt like the missing piece in my van life puzzle. Together, we built Balkan Campers what it is today, blending our love for travel with a mission to bring this lifestyle to as many people as possible.

The Balkans

We absolutely love the Balkan region and its amazing people. There’s a warmth here that’s hard to find anywhere else. We’ve heard countless stories from our customers about locals helping them out when they needed it—no charge, no fuss, just genuine kindness. In the Balkans, people still come before business, and that makes every trip special.

And the nature? It’s unbelievably diverse. Picture stunning mountains and crystal-clear rivers in Slovenia, sun-drenched islands along Croatia’s coast, dramatic canyons in Montenegro, and vibrant, exotic cities in Bosnia. Every place has something different to offer.

Plus, travel here won’t break the bank. Many countries have great prices, and the food is fantastic. In Bosnia, for example, just €100 can get you days of delicious food and a full dive into the culture.

Let’s go camping!

One of the best things about camping in the Balkans? In some countries, you can still camp for FREE! Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia, Albania, and Bosnia and Herzegovina all allow free camping, giving you the freedom to enjoy nature without the extra cost.

For those exploring Slovenia and Croatia, you’ll find plenty of charming, small campsites tucked away in beautiful spots. These campsites have a cozy vibe, letting you stay close to nature and meet friendly locals and travelers along the way.

The Balkans truly offer something for every kind of camper—whether you’re looking to set up under the stars for free or prefer a laid-back campsite!

The Balkan Campers concept

These days, it’s not just us. Balkan Campers has grown into a family of nine excellent local partners across the region. Together, we manage around 30 VW camper vans, each with its charm and quirks.

All our partners are friends and fellow campervan lovers who run small mechanic garages in Slovenia, Montenegro, Croatia, and Serbia. This setup means we can offer VW campervans in various locations throughout the Balkans, often with little to no delivery cost for our customers.

So, whether you’re starting your journey in Slovenia or soaking up the coast in Montenegro, there’s a campervan waiting for you, close to where you need it!

🌎 We respect Wilderness

It’s a fact: people and tourism have an impact on our wonderful planet.

That’s why we’re trying to do our part to minimize this. We encourage our travelers to reach pick-up locations by bus or other public transport whenever possible—it’s a small step that makes a big difference.

We also found out something cool: driving a 40-year-old campervan that’s been loved and reused over the years is actually three times better for the environment than switching to the latest “green” car every four years!

In addition to recycling, we support local organizations working to keep nature wild and untouched. Every bit counts in preserving the beauty of the Balkans for future travellers.

We specialize in renting out old-school VW campervans because, in a world that’s moving too fast, sometimes it’s good to slow down. When you’re cruising down a scenic road in one of these classic vans, time feels different.
