If you have the flexibility to plan your holiday outside of peak season—either because your job allows it or your kids’ school schedules make it possible—then we’ve got seven great reasons why an off-season Balkan road trip might just be the best choice you’ll make all year.
1. Major Savings on Rental Prices
During off-season months, our rental rates drop by up to 30%! We are talking about April, May, October and November. And so do other things such as national park entry fees, campsites, parking, etc.
Also in June and September prices drop by up to 20%!
This will leave you with more budget for dining out, visiting attractions, or even extending your trip.
2. Mild, Enjoyable Weather
Summers in our region can be hot, with daytime temperatures sometimes reaching 40°C (104°F) and sea temperatures around 28°C (82°F). Not exactly ideal for anyone who loves a nice, comfortable breeze.
On a contrary off-season months such as May, June and September, the high temperatures hover around a pleasant 24°C (75°F), perfect for outdoor activities without the need to find the nearest shade or crank up the air conditioning. And as a bonus, the fish come closer to shore in these cooler months, making for better beachside views and snorkelling.
Hint: Take an off-season road trip to Montenegro and free camp in Ada Bojana beach with perfect air and ocean temperatures.
3. Fewer Tourists, More Freedom
Picture it: no lines for the restroom, no 45-minute waits for your pizza Frutti di Mare, and no shoulder-to-shoulder beach crowds. Off-season means you can skip the lines and maybe even get a little adventurous on the beach without the fear of a wandering grandmother or ranger giving you side-eye. More space, more privacy, more freedom—what’s not to love?
Hint: Take an off-season Croatia road trip and visit Plitvice National Park in Croatia. It is incredible.
4. Cheaper Campsites and Friendlier Hosts
Just like rental prices, campsites are more budget-friendly during the off-season, often dropping up to 50% in cost. You won’t need to book campsites months in advance or stress about availability. Even better? The locals and campsite owners are typically more relaxed and welcoming—they’ve had their “beauty sleep” after the busy season rush and are ready to greet you with genuine smiles.
Hint: Take an off-season road trip in Slovenia or Croatia where free camping is not legal. You will be able to enjoy beautiful camping spots on the lakes or beach for low off-season price!
5. Traffic Jams? Hardly Any
One of the biggest travel headaches—traffic—is practically a non-issue in the off-season. Imagine gliding along scenic roads without honking horns, bumper-to-bumper delays, or irritated drivers. It’s just you, the open road, and miles of breath taking scenery.
6. Authentic Experiences with Locals
With fewer tourists around, you’ll find that everything just feels more genuine and relaxed. Local shopkeepers, café owners, and residents aren’t overwhelmed by the high-season crowds, so they’re more likely to strike up a conversation, share local tips, and even go the extra mile to make your stay memorable. You’ll see a side of the place that few summer visitors ever get to experience.
Hint: Take an off-season road trip in Serbia, Macedonia or Bosnia and Herzegovina. People will treat you as you were a part of their family.
7. Supporting Local Businesses All Year Round
When you travel off-season, you help us keep doing what we love: sharing this incredible place with you. An extended season means we can avoid having to take on seasonal or routine jobs, giving us more time to invest in creating unforgettable experiences, enhancing our services, and connecting with nature. Your off-season trip helps us keep our passion alive—and for that, we’re deeply grateful.
Hint: Take an off-season road trip in Slovenia and visit us on our little farm. We will make fire and play some drums.
